I would like to know why this feature was added. I myself don't really find it necessary, but that's just me. I think there should also be an option in the account settings to turn off this feature. I would rather not receive e-mail notifying me I've received a voice-mail. I log into the site enough to find out such things.
Anyone second this?

It was added because it was asked for by other users. I can pass on your suggestion about a way to opt out of receiving an email, though, as I do agree with that much. That way you wouldn't have to get one, but it wouldn't take the feature away from those who want it.

Yeah, I think there should be a way to turn it off. When you log in to the site, a link will appear that will say something like "new voicemail: x" (where x is the number of new voicemails). Also, I believe it notifies you when you log in to zbp about new voicemail, though it's been over 6 months since I last went on zbp so i'm not 100 % sure. So while some users may like this feature, I think there should be a way to disable this, like you can with private mail message notifications.

Agreed. It's a cool feature for the people who log onto ZBP more than the site, that way, they can check their Email before logging in if they want, but there should be an option to opt out.
